Author talk in which Philadelphia native Seth S. Tannenbaum discusses his new book on the social and political divisions of twentieth-century baseball stadiums.
Seth S. Tannenbaum is coming to Parkway Central Library on Thursday, October 22, to talk about his new book, Bleacher Seats and Luxury Suites: Democracy and Division at the Twentieth-Century Ballpark (University of Illinois Press, 2026). Tannenbaum is a Philadelphia native, so this is a homecoming of sorts—he's returning to the city to discuss a work that uses the baseball stadium as a lens for looking at the social and political divisions of the twentieth century.
The book takes a seating chart and treats it like a map of class and power. It looks at how the layout of the ballpark—from the cheap bleachers to the luxury suites—mirrored the social hierarchies and political divisions of the era. It's baseball-themed, but the real subject is how those divisions played out in the stands and what they say about the society that built them. If you've ever sat in a stadium and noticed the sharp line between where one section ends and the next begins, that's exactly the kind of thing he's digging into.
The talk is part of the programming from the library's Social Science and History Department, so it fits right in with the kind of deep-dive, intellectual conversation they host. It's less about the box score and more about the people in the seats.
