Author Angela Nissel talks with Tayyib Smith about her memoir 'Good Grief, Pass the Bread, Mom is Dead' in the Free Library of Philadelphia's fall author series.
Angela Nissel comes to Parkway Central Library on Tuesday, November 3, for a conversation about her memoir, Good Grief, Pass the Bread, Mom is Dead. She'll be joined on stage by Tayyib Smith, and the talk is part of the Free Library of Philadelphia Foundation's fall author series, which brings together writers, public figures, journalists and local cultural icons throughout the season.
Nissel is a television writer, producer and national bestselling author, known for the comedic memoirs The Broke Diaries and Mixed. Good Grief, Pass the Bread, Mom is Dead chronicles her time as the caretaker of her terminally ill mother, after she renounced Christianity and was admitted to a psychiatric ward. Before she moved into television, Nissel worked as a temp for the IRS, a stripper and a "sleep apnea auditor" who spent nights watching people snore in a hospital. Her writing credits include The Other Black Girl, Mixed-ish and Scrubs; she lives in Los Angeles.
Her conversation partner, Tayyib Smith, is an entrepreneur and founding partner of The Growth Collective, whose real-estate work through Smith & Roller Holdings focuses on inclusive urban development in communities of color. The two will talk through the memoir and the experiences Nissel describes in it.
