Jazz saxophonist Kamasi Washington and vocalist Ami Taf Ra perform their debut album 'The Prophet and the Madman' in a seated venue with dinner and wine service.
Ami Taf Ra and Kamasi Washington are playing City Winery on Thursday, November 5, with two showtimes: 6 PM and 9:30 PM. The night is built around The Prophet and the Madman, Taf Ra's debut album, which Washington produced and released through Brainfeeder. The two are coming together to celebrate their creative partnership and the record that grew out of it.
That record pulls from a wide range of traditions. Taf Ra, a North African vocalist and composer based in Los Angeles, blends Moroccan Gnawa and Arabic musical traditions with gospel, soul and spiritual jazz. The writing of Kahlil Gibran, particularly his work on healing and ancestral memory, served as part of the inspiration. You can hear that range on a track like "How I Became a Madman," where Taf Ra's operatic voice moves between intimacy, theatricality and spiritual release.
Washington is a Grammy winner and Emmy nominee, often cited as one of the defining musical voices of his generation. He moves fluently between jazz, soul, hip hop, classical and screen work, and his production shapes the sound of the album. Taf Ra's own resume is international, with work including the Dutch Royal Metropole Orchestra, the Hollywood Bowl Jazz Festival and City Winery Boston.
