Halloween-themed workshop by the local animal shelter ACCT where families and children ages 7 and over learn about cats and make a black cat decoration.
ACCT is hosting a workshop on black cat myths and facts at the Lillian Marrero Library on Friday, October 23. It's a Free Library of Philadelphia program run by the local animal shelter, and it's built around Halloween: families and children ages 7 and up get to learn about cats and make their own black cat Halloween decoration to take home.
The session is set up for kids and parents to go through together. The first half is the learning part—walking through the myths and facts that surround black cats—and the second half is the craft, where you'll put together a black cat decoration for the season. It's a good way to spend a Friday afternoon if you've got a cat-loving kid at home, and since it's a library program, it's a low-pressure environment for families.
If you haven't been to the Lillian Marrero Library before, it's at 601 West Lehigh Avenue, right at 6th and Lehigh in North Philadelphia. The branch serves Central North Philly, Fairhill, St. Edwards/Hartranft, and West Kensington. The building itself is a white limestone Grecian design by Andrew Carnegie that opened in 1906; at the time, it was the largest library in Pennsylvania. It was rehabilitated in 1967 and again in 1997 as part of the 'Changing Lives' campaign, and in 2018, the Religious Leaders Council of Greater Philadelphia designated it a Zone of Peace. The neighborhood grew around 19th-century industry, including the Stetson Hat Factory at 5th and Montgomery, which closed in 1971.
