A free display by the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, created by its undergraduate and school placement students, that uses the museum's collections to engage the community.
The Community Case is on at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History from 4 September to 6 November 2026. It's a display the Museum uses to show its work with community members, drawing on its collections to get people involved with natural history.
This particular case was designed, created and brought to life by the Museum's undergraduate and school placement students as part of the Natural Science and Heritage Scheme 2026. They reinterpreted the theme through their own experiences of the Museum's collections, spaces and people, so it's a student-led take on the Museum's work rather than a curator-led one.
It helps to have a bit of context for the building it's in. The Oxford University Museum of Natural History opened in 1860 as the world's first purpose-built natural history museum; its neogothic building dates back to the 1850s and now houses more than seven million specimens. The Community Case is a regular feature of that, a way for the Museum to open up its collections to the people who visit it.
