There are plenty of places in Oxford to grab a quick coffee and keep moving, but The Independent Cafe is built for the opposite. Tucked into The Old Palace at 85-87 St Aldate's, steps from Christ Church Cathedral, it sits inside what was once a bishop's residence, and that history is part of the appeal. It has earned a reputation as one of the better Oxford independents for an actual sit-down, and the space backs that up with ample seating both indoors and outdoors, so it handles groups without much fuss.

The kitchen keeps things straightforward. Coffee, sandwiches, baked goods, light meals and desserts cover the basics, and the prices sit comfortably between £1 and £10. A few things stand out: the Victorian sponge cake is light and fluffy without being overly sweet, the full English bap is a hearty version with brown sauce, and the oatmilk latte is smooth and dairy-free, with oat milk offered at no extra charge. Cinnamon and pistachio lattes turn up regularly too, and the lattes in general are expertly brewed and served in cups that look the part. For something more substantial, there is a sausage and egg bap or battie at £7.50.
It is a cosy, casual, family-friendly spot, and it is set up for a range of visits. You can sit in, take away or even use the drive-through, and Mastercard and mobile payments are both fine. Accessibility is well covered, with wheelchair-accessible facilities and toilets. There are no reservations, so you just walk in when you like, and while there is no Wi-Fi, there is limited password-protected internet if you really need it. It is the sort of place that works as well for a slow breakfast as it does for a mid-afternoon break.
On the practical side, it is open every day, from 07:30 to 17:00 Monday to Friday and 09:00 to 17:30 at the weekend, though bank holidays can throw those times around. The neighbourhood is busy, with Alice's Shop, the Oxford University Catholic Chaplaincy, a Tesco Express and St Aldates Police Station all right next door, so it is easy to drop in while you are already passing through. The food hygiene rating is a full 5 out of 5, which is a reassuring detail for anywhere serving hot food.
Reviews lean positive, with a 4.1 from Trip.com and a 4.2 on Google Maps across nearly 300 entries. Recent comments from late 2025 and mid-2026 point to the coffee, the sausage and egg bap and the view of the colleges from the window as the highlights, with the friendly staff getting a mention too, though a few people have found the service occasionally unwelcoming. Proper Coffee gave it an 'Everyday' rating in its April 2026 review, which places it in a different category from the more specialised shops like Jericho Coffee Traders, Horsebox Coffee Co or Colombia Coffee Roasters. It is not trying to be a destination for coffee aficionados so much as a reliable, comfortable place to sit and have a decent brew and a bite to eat in the middle of town.
