In-person beginner knitting workshop to learn short-row shaping for creating curves, heels, toes and shoulders.
Knit Nottingham is hosting a Short Row Shaping for Beginners workshop this Saturday, 24 October, from 1 pm to 3:30 pm. It's a session for knitters who've got the basics down and want to add a new tool to their kit, rather than someone just picking up the needles for the first time.
If you're not familiar with short rows, they're a bit of a game-changer. Most knitting goes back and forth in full rows, but short rows let you work only part of a row before turning. That's how you build in a curve or a bump without adding extra stitches, which is exactly what you need for things like the heel of a sock, the toes, or the shaping around the shoulders of a jumper. Once you've got it, you can start tweaking your patterns and making things fit better rather than just following a flat chart.
That's the core of what the workshop covers: how the technique works and how to use it to shape your work. It's an in-person session, so you'll be working through it with other people rather than watching a video on your own, which makes it a lot easier to get the hang of if you're stuck on a particular turn. The organisers describe it as a fun, interactive way to pick up a new skill, and it's aimed at knitters with some experience who want to expand what they can do.
