Hands-on linocut printmaking workshop for ages 14+ to design, carve and print your own Gothic-inspired pattern inspired by Augustus Pugin.
Nottingham Cathedral is running a linocut printmaking workshop called Print Your Own Gothic at Cathedral Hall on Tuesday 15 December, from 1 pm to 5 pm, with doors opening at 12:30 pm. It's an afternoon session open to anyone aged 14 and over, and you don't need any prior printmaking experience to join in.
The whole afternoon is a hands-on introduction to linocut. You'll start by developing a design, then carve it into a lino block, ink it, and hand-print it. The theme is Gothic-inspired patterns, and the starting point is the intricate Gothic Revival work of Augustus Pugin, whose designs are all around the cathedral. By the end, everyone takes home the patterns they've printed.
One of the better things about this one is that you can bring something of your own to customise. A T-shirt, hoodie, jacket or jeans all work, and cotton or linen take the ink best, though scrap materials are provided if you'd rather not risk your favourite clothes. If you're already fond of getting your hands messy with ink, it'll still be a good way to spend a Tuesday afternoon; if you've never touched a lino cutter before, it's a straightforward place to start.
