A Scottish ceilidh dance night for all levels, with recorded music and dances walked through and called in a gender-free way.
Nottingham Ceilidh Club are back at The Boat & Horses in Beeston on Friday 6 November, bringing Scottish ceilidh dancing to the pub for the evening. It's one of their Beeston Dance Nights, and this one's got a Christmas theme, so it's a good shout if you're looking to get into the festive spirit a bit early.
One thing to know upfront: this isn't a live band night. The music is recorded, so the focus is entirely on the dancing rather than a stage act. The club pitches the night at everyone from seasoned dancers to complete beginners, and they back that up by walking every dance through before you start. The calling is gender-free, too, so you don't need a partner to get involved. It's as much about the upbeat tunes as the friendly company, and since it's open to all ages, it's one you can bring the whole family along to.
If you've never done ceilidh before, the 'walking through' part is the bit that makes it work. Instead of being thrown in the deep end, the steps are explained and demonstrated first, so by the time the music kicks in, you've got the basic pattern down. From there, it's just about finding your rhythm and enjoying the chaos of the room. It's a social way to spend a Friday night, and because it's in a pub, you've got a drink within easy reach when you need a breather.
