A symphonic celebration of British northern soul and club culture with the BBC Concert Orchestra, conducted by Joe Duddell and curated by Stuart Maconie.
Northern Soul Orchestrated comes to the Royal Concert Hall on Tuesday 10 November, with the BBC Concert Orchestra taking the stage. It's a symphonic celebration of British club culture, and it's curated by the writer and broadcaster Stuart Maconie, who frames it as a night here to get you on your feet.
The show puts a symphonic edge on the beats that took towns across the industrial North and the Midlands by storm in the 1960s and 1970s. What started as a following of forgotten American soul B-sides grew into all-night dances for factory workers, and that's the sound they're bringing to the hall. The whole thing is conducted by Joe Duddell, with a line-up of six singers — Emily Holligan, Louise LaBelle, Holly Petrie, Brendan Reilly, Nick Shirm and Darrell Smith — to handle the vocals.
