Over-18s spiritual jazz night in which Mojafan fuse Alice Coltrane and Ethiopian jazz with drum'n'bass, funk and jungle.
Mojafan play Jamcafé on Wednesday 4 November, with doors opening at 19:00. They're a spiritual jazz outfit that pulls from a wide stretch of territory: the late-1960s spiritual jazz of Alice Coltrane and Pharaoh Sanders, 1970s Ethiopian jazz, and then drum'n'bass, funk and jungle. It's a lot to hold in one set, but that's exactly where they sit.
They'll be playing from their new album, Mae Be for Ever, which they describe as a powerhouse of raw energy, with solos interspersed by dreamy effects and gentle introspective moments. The band is cited as one of the few hard-hitting spiritual jazz acts to get audiences dancing, so expect the dancefloor side of things to take as much space as the listening side.
On stage, it's a six-piece: Gary Reader on saxes, Lucas Walters on keys, Beau Presley on bass, Owen Campbell and Kulvir Bhambra both on percussion, and Jamie Sykes on drums. With two percussionists alongside the drums, there's plenty of rhythmic ground to cover, and the saxes and keys give them the melodic range to move between the more expansive jazz and the tighter funk and jungle beats.
