Live concert celebrating the 50th anniversary of Tubular Bells, with the whole of Tubular Bells I and extended sections of II and III, led by Robin Smith.
The Best of Tubular Bells I, II & III comes to the Royal Concert Hall on Monday 1 March 2027, at 7:30pm. It's part of the Tubular Bells 50th Anniversary Celebration tour, which looks back at Mike Oldfield's trilogy of albums spanning 27 years. The first, Tubular Bells, was created in 1971 and released in 1973; Tubular Bells II followed in 1992, its premiere at Edinburgh Castle becoming one of the most viewed and streamed musical events ever; Tubular Bells III arrived in 1998, and its excerpt 'Far Above The Clouds' was featured in the 2012 London Olympic Opening Ceremony. The Nottingham date is one of 26 UK tour dates running from 1 to 22 March 2027.
On the night, the show performs the whole of Tubular Bells I in full, alongside extended sections of Tubular Bells II and III, and the single 'Moonlight Shadow'. It's a live group on stage, led and arranged by Robin Smith, Oldfield's long-term collaborator. Mike Oldfield himself does not appear. The set brings together the three albums that give the tour its name, with the original 1973 record taking centre stage.
If you're familiar with the trilogy, you'll recognise the different eras it pulls from: the early seventies, the early nineties, and the late nineties, all held together by the same title. The full run of Tubular Bells I is the main event, and the extended sections of the sequels fill out the rest of the evening, with 'Moonlight Shadow' as a familiar addition. The whole thing is played live by the ensemble, rather than as a recording.
