BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, with conductor Nil Venditti and horn soloist Ben Goldscheider, plays Mozart's Fourth Horn Concerto, Mendelssohn and Ortiz.
The BBC Philharmonic Orchestra are coming to the Royal Concert Hall on Friday 9 April 2027, with a programme built around the horn. It's a night that puts the instrument front and centre, rather than tucked away in the back of the brass section.
The evening opens with Mozart's Fourth Horn Concerto, a piece that gives the soloist plenty of room to stretch. It's one of the more lyrical of Mozart's horn concertos, and it's the kind of work that lets you hear the instrument's range and tone without the rest of the orchestra getting in the way. From there, the programme moves into Mendelssohn, whose writing for the horn is usually more integrated into the orchestral texture, and then on to Ortiz, which brings a more contemporary voice to the mix. The three composers sit in different eras, so the set runs from the late 18th century through to the modern day, with the horn as the constant thread.
Leading the orchestra is conductor Nil Venditti, and the horn soloist is Ben Goldscheider. Between them, they'll be guiding the BBC Philharmonic through the Mozart, the Mendelssohn, and the Ortiz, so the night is as much about the soloist's performance as it is about the orchestra as a whole.
