Free badminton tournament with singles and doubles for University of Nottingham students, held as part of the university's Diwali celebrations.
Jubilee Sports Centre is hosting a badminton tournament on Saturday 7 November, from 3 pm to 7 pm, as part of the University of Nottingham's Diwali celebrations. It's a collaboration between UoN Sport and ResX, the university's residential-experience service, and it's open to students of all levels. There are singles and doubles formats, so you can play on your own or grab a partner, and the whole thing is set up so anyone can get involved, compete and soak up the Diwali vibes.
Entry is free, and there are small prizes for the winners. Every participant gets Indian sweets, too. It's aimed at students living in University Park, Jubilee Campus and Sutton Bonington halls, as well as listed halls.
The timing is part of the wider celebration. Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November, described as the biggest night of the Indian year, celebrated with lamps, sweets, new clothes and fireworks. On the evening, after sunset, Lakshmi Puja is performed in the pradosh period — roughly the first two and a half hours after dark — and the lamps are lit as it gets dark. The tournament runs the day before, on Saturday, so it's a way to get into the spirit before the main night.
