If you are after a festive night out that leans on nostalgia rather than a pantomime, Sheringham Little Theatre has a nice option landing this December. Christmas Crooners makes its debut at the venue on Friday 11 December at 7.30pm, and it is built around the Great American Christmas Songbook — the sort of music that defined the swing and big band era.

The show is styled on the Christmas TV specials of the 1950s, 60s and 70s, so expect a classic, slightly old-fashioned atmosphere rather than anything avant-garde. It is a tribute to the big voices of that world — Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, The Andrews Sisters, Nat King Cole, Andy Williams, Dean Martin, Matt Monro and Tony Bennett — and it is pitched as a celebration of that era as much as a concert. This year's production comes with new arrangements added for the first time, and it follows a run of sold-out performances at other theatres across East Anglia, so it is not an untested show.
On stage, the evening is guided by Stephen, Paul and Natalie, three performers who have played for HM The Queen, BBC Radio 2 and some of the UK's better-known venues. The setlist is exactly what you would expect from the title: White Christmas, Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire, Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, Santa Baby, It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas, Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town and Silver Bells, with plenty more woven in around them. It is billed as a full-chested, interactive show with a fair amount of laughter and seasonal sparkle, so it is as much about the room as the record player.
On price, it is reasonably accessible: £20 Premium, £18 Standard and £14.50 Value, so you can pick the level that suits you. Tickets are on sale now and can be booked online, which is the easiest way to secure a spot early. If you would rather speak to someone, the box office is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 3pm on 01263 822347, and they take emails at boxoffice@sheringhamlittletheatre.com. Early booking is recommended, which is not surprising given the show's track record elsewhere in East Anglia.
For anyone who has not been before, the venue itself is worth a note. Sheringham Little Theatre is a community theatre and registered charity sitting in the middle of the village, a short walk from the train station and the local bus service, with taxi stops and plenty of parking nearby. It runs a busy year-round programme — a professional summer repertory season, a traditional family pantomime in winter, and a steady stream of theatre, film, music and opera and ballet screenings in spring and autumn — and it is a member of Club250. There is disabled access, adapted toilets and facilities for people with hearing impairment, as well as public toilets and areas set aside for groups and educational visits. One thing to know before you go: dogs are not admitted, except for guide dogs, and credit cards are accepted with a charge. It is a compact, well-run place that does a lot for the village, and a night of crooners in December is a fitting way to see it in full swing.
