A playful transport exhibition with hands-on vehicles and toys designed for families with younger children at the Discovery Museum.
Things That Go! is running at the Discovery Museum on Blandford Square, and it's a good one to keep on your radar if you've got younger ones in tow. It's a playful transport exhibition that opens the museum's brand-new Special Exhibitions gallery on floor one, a space designed specifically for families with younger children, so it's built for the kind of visit where you're happy to let the kids lead the way.
At its heart, it brings the world of transport to life through hands-on play. Boats, bicycles, tractors, trains and planes are right at the centre, and the whole thing is aimed at families with primary-age children. The museum recommends it for ages 4 to 11, but it's suitable for under-5s too, so it works whether you're dealing with a preschooler or a primary schooler. It's the kind of setup where the kids can actually get stuck in rather than just looking at things behind glass.

There are a few practical bits that make it an easy one to fit in. The museum tags it as SEND-friendly, and you can walk in at any time, so there's no need to book a slot or time your arrival to the minute. It's open from 25 July 2026 through to 28 February 2027, which gives you plenty of time to get there whenever it suits you best—whether that's a rainy Tuesday morning or a weekend afternoon. Entry is free, so it's a low-pressure way to spend a few hours with the family. You'll find it on floor one in the new Special Exhibitions gallery at the Discovery Museum, Blandford Square, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 4JA.
