A festive market with over 70 traders, a Christmas village, igloos and entertainment across Grey Street and Grainger Street.
The Newcastle Christmas Market returns to Grey's Monument on Thursday 19 November, running through to Wednesday 23 December. It's a long stretch — 35 open days in total, open every single day of its run, so you've got plenty of time to drift in and out rather than trying to cram everything into one afternoon.
The market centres on Grey's Monument, the neoclassical column at the top of Grey Street, and spreads across Grey Street, Grainger Street and Nelson Street in more than 70 traditional timber chalets. It's a local affair: around 84 per cent of the stalls are run by businesses within 20 miles of the city centre, with a good deal of them run by Grainger Market's favourite vendors. The food runs from North East staples like stotties, singin' hinnies and Geordie sausages to German bratwurst, Dutch stroopwafels, Spanish churros and Caribbean, Greek and French street food. Moosenwirt, an Alpine pop-up bar run by local operators, has become the default meeting point.
The market comes into its own after dark when the lights go up between the sandstone terraces and classical facades of Grey Street, one of the city's most atmospheric festive streets. It's run by NE1 Ltd, the Newcastle Business Improvement District.
