Free screening of a series of short films by Beacon Films exploring what treasure means.
Beacon Films have a new series running at the Great North Museum: Hancock on Barras Bridge, called Unearthed Treasures. It opened on Friday 16 October and stays on until Thursday 31 December, so you've got plenty of time to catch it over the next couple of months.
The whole thing is built around a single question: what does treasure actually mean? Beacon Films gave a group of filmmakers that as their brief, and each one took it in their own direction. They've all had to grapple with the same thing from different angles — what treasure is, and who or what gets to define it in the first place. Because they each approached it their own way, you end up with a collection of films rather than one single answer, and the different takes are where the interest lies.
It's curated by Philip Hughes, who's put the films together into a programme that runs through the autumn and winter. The screenings are spread across the whole period, so you can drop in when it suits you rather than having to see everything in one go. If you're looking for something to do over the next few weekends, there are showings on Saturday 17, Sunday 18 and Monday 19 October, all starting at 12:00pm.
