Toronto songwriter Abigail Lapell performs modern folk songs live at The Cluny, presented by Folklore Sessions. 18+ event.
Abigail Lapell plays The Cluny on Thursday 19 November, presented by Folklore Sessions. She's a Toronto songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who works across vocals, piano, harmonica and fingerstyle guitar, and she'll be performing her modern folk songs live.
Her music is described as 'prairie noir' or 'Canadiana desert rock' — haunting, modern folk that draws on the wide, open landscapes of the Canadian prairies. It's a sound that sits at the intersection of folk and something a bit darker and more atmospheric, and she handles the instruments herself, switching between piano, harmonica and fingerstyle guitar across the set.
She's coming off a strong run of recognition in Canada. Her album Anniversary, released in May 2024 on Outside Music, earned her a JUNO Award nomination for Contemporary Roots Album of the Year. She's also picked up several Canadian Folk Music Awards, including English Songwriter of the Year and Contemporary Album of the Year. The record reached number one on Canadian folk radio and has gathered tens of millions of streams across digital platforms, and she tours widely across Canada, the US and Europe.
