Three paranormal investigation nights for the first time in the theatre's history, using special equipment to record unexplained activity behind the curtain.
Newcastle Ghost Tours are taking over the Newcastle Civic Theatre for three nights on 28, 29 and 30 September, the first time the theatre has ever opened its doors after dark for paranormal investigation. Each session runs two and a half hours, and the whole thing starts with a short historical introduction from a Civic Theatre guide before the investigation takes over.
Once the guide finishes, you'll head behind the scenes of the historic venue to call out to the spirits said to haunt it. The main ghost story belongs to Joe, an alleged former stagehand who died in an accident and, according to local lore, still searches the audience for a wife or partner. The theatre's executive manager, Leonie Wallace, describes him as a friendly presence. Renata Daniel, CEO of Newcastle Ghost Tours, says the Civic is one of the Hunter's most requested locations for paranormal investigation, with previous tours turning up photographs of unexplained figures and shadows.
As for the investigation itself, it's not just standing around in the dark. You'll be using gear like a spirit box and trip wires, with a good chunk of the session spent in the dark. It's a chance to go behind the curtain and see the parts of the theatre that usually stay hidden from the public.

If you're not quite up for the paranormal side of things, the theatre is also running seven additional Behind the Curtain backstage tours on those same nights, so you can still get a look at the inner workings without the ghost hunting. The investigation nights run 28, 29 and 30 September, each session two and a half hours long.
