Pappa Sven's Nordic Film Club is back at Tower Cinema on Sunday 26 July, with the documentary Mother of Snow Cranes on the bill. The club is run by Pappa Sven, an authentic Nordic design and lifestyle store here in Newcastle, and they've been bringing some of the best and most interesting Nordic cinema to the city since they started. The whole idea is to transport you into Nordic life through film, and this one fits the bill.
Mother of Snow Cranes is directed by Finnish filmmaker Iiris Härmä and tells the true story of ornithologist Ellen Vuosalo, who earned the nickname 'Mother of Snow Cranes'. Born in Toronto to Finnish immigrants and having studied zoology in the United States, she moved to Iran after marrying an Iranian man. She spent five decades there studying and protecting the last flocks of the critically endangered Siberian crane in the wetlands of northern Iran. The film blends conservation and scientific research with the cultural and gender norms she challenged along the way.
It's a long-term commitment to a single species, and the film lets that scale sink in. You get the scientific side of the work, the conservation effort, and the personal story of a woman living and working far from where she started. It's a Finnish director filming a Finnish-Canadian woman working in Iran, so there's a fair bit of distance to cover in one sitting.

Tickets are A$25, and the screening is at Tower Cinema, 183 King Street, Newcastle, 2300. The club usually runs on the first Tuesday of every month, but this one falls on a Sunday, so keep that in mind if you're planning your weekend.
