Live improvised jazz performances in an intimate venue resembling 1920s New York jazz clubs, presented by the Newcastle Improvised Music Association.
The Underground is starting up its Tuesday night jazz series on 8 September, and it's running every Tuesday through to 22 December. The room is at The Grand Hotel, 32 Church Street in Newcastle, and the music kicks off at 8pm.
What you'll hear is high-calibre live improvised jazz. The nights are run as a listening venue rather than a background one, so it's a place to sit and focus on the music rather than chat over it. The room is described as an intimate listening environment that recalls the New York jazz clubs of the 1920s, and the musicians on the bill come from near and far.
The series is presented by the Newcastle Improvised Music Association Inc together with The Grand Hotel. Because it's a weekly thing, you can drop in on a Tuesday that suits you rather than committing to one specific date. If you're after something a bit different, the same venue keeps the jazz going on Thursday nights, which are reserved for the jazz jams.
