A talk exploring the hidden physics of glow-in-the-dark ghost mushrooms, with trivia and a meet-and-greet session.
Karen Livesey is taking the stage at the Newcastle Museum on Monday 17 August for Fabulous Fungi and Hidden Physics, a talk that kicks off National Science Week. It's a look at the ghost mushrooms that pop up across the Hunter region every autumn, and the physics that explains why they glow and how they scatter their spores.
Livesey is an award-winning physics researcher, speaker and lecturer, the NSW Chair of the Australian Institute of Physics and an honorary Associate Professor at the University of Wollongong. She's not just talking about this from a distance, either. After moving to Newcastle, she became fascinated by the ghost mushrooms and launched Glenrock Ghost Fungus Tours earlier this year, which has already picked up more than 1,000 online followers and 160 in-person guests. This talk is a chance to hear her unpack the science behind them.
The evening is rated G and recommended for ages eight and over, so it's one you can bring the kids along to with adult supervision. Doors open at 6:00pm, the talk runs from 6:15 to 7:15, and there's a meet-and-greet from 7:15 to 7:45 if you want to stick around and chat with her afterwards.
