Free community event marking 40 years of clinical trials at Calvary Mater Newcastle and their impact on patient care in the region.
Calvary Mater Newcastle is marking 40 years of clinical trials with a community event at the Fort Scratchley Function Centre on Wednesday 28 October. It's a milestone that takes a bit of digging to really place: for four decades, the hospital has run clinical trials right here in Newcastle, and this is the occasion to look back at what that's actually meant for the region.
If you're not familiar with how it works, clinical trials are the bridge between a new idea in a lab and a treatment that actually reaches patients. When they happen locally, it means people in the Hunter can access new therapies without having to travel to the big city hospitals in Sydney. Over forty years, those trials have shaped the way patient care is delivered across the region, and this event is as much about that history as it is about the work still going on.
The day is framed as both a reflection and a look ahead. There'll be a focus on the impact these trials have had on local healthcare over the last four decades, and a look at where clinical research is heading next. It's a chance to see the scale of what's been happening behind the scenes at the hospital, and to hear how that work translates into the care people receive.

It's a free community event, so you don't need to be a medical professional or have a background in research to get something out of it. The venue is the Fort Scratchley Function Centre, part of the Fort Scratchley Historic Site on Nobby's Road in Newcastle East, and it all happens on 28 October.
