There are a few spots in Newcastle that lean on the view to do the heavy lifting, but Merewether Surfhouse is hard to argue with. It sits right on the sand at 5 Henderson Parade, Merewether Beach, and the building itself is a bit of a statement: three storeys of glass that give you a 270-degree look over the ocean from pretty much anywhere you stand. It has been part of the local food and drink scene since 2026, and it's grown into a proper institution in the time it's been open.

The restaurant sits on the top floor, which is where the best views are. The kitchen runs Modern Australian with a Mediterranean and Italian lean, and it does a lot of its work over a wood-fired oven and grill. The focus is firmly on 100% Australian seafood, sourced daily from suppliers across the Hunter Valley, with Executive Chef Ryan Baird and Head Chef Bryce Harling at the helm. It's a big room, seating up to 300 for a meal and stretching to 800 for events, and the dress code is smart-casual, so you won't feel out of place whether you've come from the beach or somewhere a bit nicer.
That's the part that catches people out, though: the restaurant doesn't run every day. While the venue as a whole is open seven days a week, the restaurant only does lunch and dinner from Wednesday to Sunday. If you're after a table, it's worth booking ahead, because the bar and the restaurant both fill up, and the Beach Bar downstairs works on a first-come, first-served basis. The rest of the venue keeps going around it: breakfast runs daily from 7:00 to 11:30, lunch from 12:00 to 3:00, and the rooftop bar stays open from 11:30 until late every day of the week. Down at the Beach Bar, there's a taco bar that takes over on Friday and Saturday from 3:00 until close.
On the plate, the menu leans on sustainably sourced seafood, premium meats and things straight off the grill. Oysters, flathead, steak, lobster and a range of pasta dishes are the ones that come up most, and there's a kids menu and a wine list to round it out. Up at the rooftop bar, the Spritz menu is the draw, with combinations like Aperol and pomegranate, Pimms, limoncello, elderflower and watermelon, alongside arancini, meatballs, burrata, charcuterie boards and coastal flatbreads. There are gluten-free and vegetarian options too, so it's not hard to feed a group with different requirements.
It's a busy place, and the reviews reflect that, sitting at 4.6 stars across nearly half a million ratings, with most people coming for the beachfront location, the ocean views and the atmosphere at breakfast and sunset. A few people have flagged inconsistencies in value and service, which is the trade-off that comes with a venue this size and this busy. Still, it's a lot of the appeal: the alfresco dining, the live music, the air conditioning, free Wi-Fi and disabled access make it an easy place to bring a group, and it doubles as a function space for weddings and corporate events. And if you're already down here, Merewether Beach is part of the Bathers Way coastal walk, so the ocean baths and the Surfest competition are only a short stroll away.
