Masters Games return to Newcastle in 2027

Newcastle is about to get a lot busier on the sporting front, and it is not for the usual professional crowd. The 21st Australian Masters Games are coming to the region, shared across Newcastle and the Central Coast from 13 to 20 November 2027. It is one of the largest multisport carnivals in the country, and for Newcastle, it is a bit of a homecoming: the city last hosted the Games back in 2001, so this is the second time around, while the Central Coast takes a turn as host for the first time. The 2027 edition also doubles as the 40th anniversary of the whole series, which first kicked off in Tasmania in 1987.

The first thing to know is that this is not a closed shop for elite athletes. The Games are open to anyone aged 30 and over by 31 December 2027, with no maximum age limit at all, though a few sports like swimming and figure skating have lower minimum ages. For the vast majority of events, there are no qualifying standards to meet and no requirement to be an elite athlete, so it is built for people who enjoy sport rather than those chasing a professional podium. The scale is the real draw: more than 40 sports are already lined up, with a full program of over 50 expected in the end. That list runs the gamut from athletics, netball, and basketball to lawn bowls, dragon boat, pickleball, ten pin bowling, darts, petanque, baseball, softball and weightlifting, so there is something for almost any level of fitness or interest.

Behind the scenes, the event is backed by the City of Newcastle and the Central Coast Council and managed by UniSport Australia Limited under the Confederation of Australian Sport, which has been the national body for sport since 1976. Since the Games began, more than 135,000 people have taken part, thousands of volunteers have pitched in, and host destinations have walked away with genuine economic and community benefits. It is a well-oiled machine, and the 2027 edition is shaping up to be one of the biggest yet.

The weather should play along, too: November on the coast is generally temperate, with daytime temperatures averaging between 16 and 25 degrees, which is about as good as it gets for a week of competing outdoors.
