If you have been keeping an eye out for the Newy Bun Run, the short version is that we are still waiting on the details. The 2026 edition is definitely on the horizon — it is a family-friendly community event in the Hunter region that pairs a fun run with a local food focus, and it comes back year after year — but the specifics that actually matter for planning, like the date, the route, entry fees and where to register, have not been released yet.
Every week we pick 🏆 the 5 best 🏆 things to do in Newcastle and send them to your inbox. Just one weekly email, no spam.

It is worth knowing who is behind it while you wait. The race is put on by H Events, a local family business with nearly thirty years of experience pulling people together through running, triathlon and open water swimming events across Newcastle and the Hunter. Their races are built to be inclusive of all ages and abilities, and they tend to pick the kind of locations the region is known for, from the coastline and harbours to vineyards and parklands. They also partner with official charities, so there is usually a way to raise money as part of your entry through the Grassrootz platform.
Since the Bun Run is still TBC, the good news is that the Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Hunter region is rarely short of something to walk or run. If you are after a regular fix, Parkrun is the obvious starting point: free, timed 5km runs every Saturday morning at 8am, with a huge spread of locations across the area including Carrington, Fingal Bay, Maitland, Stockton and The Terrace at Raymond Terrace. You just need to register on their website before your first run to get a barcode.
For something with a bit more scale, the Lake Mac Run is the next big one on the calendar, a festival on a scenic, mostly flat road course along the Lake Macquarie foreshore at Warners Bay that has been going since 1984, with a half marathon, a 10.5km fun run and a 4km family scamper. Move for MADA is another worth circling, a free annual event raising money for Maitland against domestic abuse, with a 2km walk, live music, stalls, food trucks and kids' entertainment at Harold Gregson Park in Maitland. The Stockton Island Triathlon Festival follows shortly after, opening with the Stockton Sunrise Run on the Saturday before the triathlon day.
And if you are planning further ahead, the region keeps the calendar full well into next year. The Hill to Harbour is a run, walk and wheelchair event along the Newcastle coastline, with a main point-to-point route of about 12km from Bar Beach to Carrington and a shorter 6km option, while the Lake Macquarie Triathlon Festival at Speers Point Park brings together swimming, cycling and running across a range of distances. Between those and the weekly Parkruns, there is plenty to keep you moving while the Bun Run fills in the blanks.
