Tucked away at 11 Starbeck Avenue in Sandyford, Aidan's Kitchen is one of those places that earns its reputation as a local hidden gem. It sits in a leafy part of Newcastle, not far from Jesmond, where the Victorian terraces set a quiet backdrop for what has become a proper neighbourhood fixture. Inside, the room is all wooden tables, rattan lamps and indoor plants, with a relaxed, plant-filled feel that's hard to mistake for anything other than a place to settle in for the morning.

The kitchen runs on all-day dining, so breakfast, brunch and lunch all sit on the same menu. The pancakes are a clear draw, available as half or full stacks and topped with blueberry compote, maple butter, streaky bacon, dulce de leche with chopped bananas, chantilly cream or chocolate shavings. Around them sit the brunch classics: eggs Benedict, eggs on toast, steak and eggs, a full English and shakshuka. The house specials are where it gets interesting, though. The luxury bacon sandwich loads cream cheese, habanero chilli jam, fried egg, fresh coriander and sliced green chilli onto northern rye sourdough; The Mexicana piles two poached eggs, chorizo sausages, smashed avocado, pico de gallo, sriracha hollandaise and fresh chives on sourdough toast; and the masala toastie stuffs masala-spiced roasted potatoes, coriander chutney, house-pickled red onion, coconut lentil dhal and lime pickle into northern rye sourdough. For something sweet, the Biscoff French toast is Madagascan vanilla bean custard-soaked bread smothered in Biscoff spread and topped with vanilla chantilly cream. A few add-ons round things off: hash browns with aioli and parmesan, chorizo sausages and crispy potato chunks with romesco sauce and chimichurri.
It's a family-friendly spot with a lively atmosphere, and the prices sit comfortably under A$45, so it works as well for a quick coffee as it does for a proper sit-down brunch. Coffee and alcohol come on from 11am every day, with Baristocracy, Tea & The Gang Teas and Karma Drinks on the bill. The hours are 9am to 4pm Monday to Saturday and 9am to 3pm on Sundays, so it's very much a daytime affair. The food hygiene rating sits at 4, and the reviews back up the hype, with a 4.7-star average across nearly 800 entries praising the service and the welcome.
There's more to the name than the one kitchen, too. Little Aidan's over on Newlands Road in Gosforth carries the brand, and the same Sandyford address doubles as the home of Drum 'N' Thigh, a pop-up fried chicken concept that runs on the first Friday of each month from 5pm to 9pm, with collection from 3pm. It was born in 2019 and is run by Sam Burnett, executive chef at Aidan's Kitchen for four years and a Masterchef finalist back in 2015. Back at the main kitchen, a book club meets on the second Wednesday and last Thursday of each month from 6pm to 8:30pm, with a drink and a dessert included in the ticket. Whether you're after a quiet coffee, a big brunch or a bit of the evening life, it's a solid addition to the Newcastle food scene.
