Documentary about the Toronto Godspell production that launched the comedy revolution, part of the Doctober series at The Belcourt Theatre.
The Belcourt Theatre is screening You Had To Be There: How The Toronto Godspell Ignited The Comedy Revolution starting Tuesday, October 13, as part of its Doctober series. It's a 98-minute documentary by Nick Davis that looks back at a single production of Godspell that opened at Toronto's Royal Alexandra Theatre on June 1, 1972.
If you're not familiar with the show, Godspell is a hippie musical retelling of the Book of Matthew. The documentary focuses on the comedy icons who got their start in that particular cast: Martin Short, Eugene Levy, Gilda Radner, Victor Garber, and Paul Shaffer. It puts together interviews with the surviving participants, animated recreations, and archival material to show how the production became an unlikely incubator for modern comedy, with improv at its heart. Critics have called it a joyous celebration of that era's pop movement.
