Verse and Vision: Of Earth and Sky

Verse and Vision: Of Earth and Sky opens at Cheekwood Botanical Gardens & Estate on Saturday, October 24, and runs through Sunday, January 3. It's a graphic arts exhibition of works on paper drawn from Cheekwood's permanent collection, and it does something a bit different from your usual gallery show: it brings together visual art and ekphrastic poetry—poetry written in response to art—in a shared exploration of the natural world.

The title, Of Earth and Sky, sets the stage. The exhibition focuses on landscapes, atmospheres, and those quiet moments that shape how we relate to nature. It's meant to encourage a deeper awareness of the environments that surround and sustain us, and the combination of image and word lets you approach those themes from two directions at once. You get the visual representation of the landscape and then a poetic response to it, each one filling in what the other leaves out.

Because the works are drawn from Cheekwood's own permanent collection, this is a chance to see pieces that usually stay in the archives. The focus on works on paper—drawings, prints, and sketches—gives the whole thing a certain intimacy, and seeing them paired with poetry makes the experience more of a conversation than a stroll through a gallery. It's the kind of show that works best if you take your time with it, moving between the art and the text and letting them play off each other.

Entry is included with Gardens & Mansion access, so you can make a full day of it—walk the grounds and tour the house before or after you spend time with the exhibition. It opens at 7 PM on October 24 and stays up through the holiday season, through January 3, so there's plenty of time to fit it in.
