College football SEC opener between the Vanderbilt Commodores and the Ole Miss Rebels at FirstBank Stadium in Nashville.
Vanderbilt takes on Ole Miss at FirstBank Stadium this Saturday, Oct. 10, at 2:30 PM. It's the Commodores' SEC opener, and they're coming into it with a 3-2 record. Those two losses were both on the road, at Auburn and Georgia, so this one brings the conference action home to Nashville.
Ole Miss is the heavy favorite here. They're 3-1 and sitting at 11th in the AP poll, and they bring an elite offense led by quarterback Trinidad Chambliss. But there's a clear opening for Vanderbilt to work with: the Rebels' defense has been struggling. They're giving up more than 400 yards per game and rank 117th in scoring defense, which is a lot of room for a home team to move the ball.
Vanderbilt has a few things going for them on the offensive side. Receiver Junior Sherrill is coming off a big gameβseven catches for 107 yards, including a 60-yard touchdown. And freshman quarterback Jared Curtis, who flipped from Georgia to Vanderbilt in December, is expected to play after missing the Georgia game with an injury. If he's back in the lineup, it gives the Commodores a fresh look at the most important position on the field.
