Urban Bush Women celebrates four decades of dance and live music with works by founder Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, including the return of Shelter and the new commission Contemplations on Legacy.
Urban Bush Women bring This Is Risk to the Polk Theater on Saturday, October 17, at 7:30 PM. The evening is built around live music and the company's signature energetically charged style, and it marks four decades of their work.
The program pulls from different eras of the company. It features works by founder Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, including the return of Shelter and the first full performance of Batty Moves since 2002. Alongside those is a new commission, Contemplations on Legacy, by choreographer Vincent E. Thomas. Between the older pieces and the new one, the show looks forward and back across the company's history.
Urban Bush Women is a pioneering dance company that has spent more than 40 years at the vanguard of movement and social activism. They weave together dance, music and storytelling to celebrate culture, community and the power of collective voices, with a repertoire that honors the traditions of the African diaspora. This Is Risk is their way of marking those four decades of artistry.
