The Stray Cats bring their iconic rockabilly and rock 'n' roll to Ryman Auditorium, with The Chin Chins.
The Stray Cats play the Ryman Auditorium on Wednesday, November 18, with The Chin Chins opening. It's a rockabilly night in the heart of Nashville, and if you've never seen them live, this is a good place to start.
For those who don't know the name, The Stray Cats are the trio that brought rockabilly back to the charts in the early 1980s. They're as much about the look as the sound — the exaggerated pompadours and colorful tattoos are straight out of the 1950s, and they've kept that image since the beginning. The band formed in 1979 in Massapequa, New York, with guitarist and vocalist Brian Setzer, upright bassist Lee Rocker, and drummer Slim Jim Phantom. They took their act to London in the summer of 1980, just as a rockabilly revival was starting to take hold there.
Their self-titled 1981 album gave them three hits in a row: "Runaway Boys," "Rock This Town," and "Stray Cat Strut." Their US debut, Built for Speed, hit the American Top Ten in 1982, and 1983's Rant n' Rave With the Stray Cats produced another Top Ten hit, "(She's) Sexy + 17." The band split in 1984, reunited in 1988, and came back together again in 2003. That second reunion led to a sold-out 17-show European tour, and the London date at Brixton Academy was released as the live album and DVD Rumble In Brixton.
