Late-night jazz set by the Marc Payne Quartet, led by up-and-coming Nashville jazz pianist Marc Payne.
The Marc Payne Quartet plays Rudy's Jazz Room on Friday, October 23, from 11 PM to 1 AM. It's a late-night set, so it's more of a nightcap than a dinner-and-a-show kind of thing.
Marc Payne is one of the city's young jazz pianists, and his background tells you a lot about where his playing comes from. He started at 11 on a light-up keyboard and was playing gospel for the Corinthian Missionary Baptist Church by 13. He graduated from the Nashville School for the Arts in 2017, and he's cited Jody Nardone, Imer Santiago, Lady Chapman, Chazen Brown, Nioshi Jackson, and Rob Butts as mentors. He's shared the stage with Bobby Watson, Regi Wooten, Curtis Lundy, Roy Wooten, and Duffy Jackson, and has played the Grand Ole Opry, the Country Music Hall of Fame, and Jazz on the Cumberland.
His playing draws on a deep well of jazz piano: Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, Sonny Clark, Thelonious Monk, Hank Jones, and James P. Johnson. That's a wide spread, from the stride of James P. Johnson to the angularity of Monk and the fluid lines of Peterson. If you know those names, you can get a sense of the ground he covers—the gospel roots, the stride, and the hard bop all sitting in the same set.

It's a quartet, so you'll have a full rhythm section behind him. The show runs from 11 PM to 1 AM at Rudy's Jazz Room, 809 Gleaves Street, and it's $10 at the door.
