The Marquee Big Band reimagines modern pop hits with a postmodern big band jazz sound at the historic Woolworth Theatre.
Marquee Big Band plays the Woolworth Theatre on Friday, October 10, from 7 PM to 10:30 PM. They're part of the live music program at Marquee, which runs every Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Their whole thing is taking modern pop hits and chart-toppers and running them through a big band jazz filter. They describe it as a postmodern twist that's equal parts glamour and grit, blending the sophistication of classic big band jazz with a contemporary edge. If you've spent your life listening to the big bands of the mid-century, you'll recognize the sound, but the songs they're working with are the ones you're hearing on the radio right now.
The band calls itself the electrifying heartbeat of Marquee, and this set is one of the nights that make up the venue's regular live music schedule. It's not a one-off; it's part of a program that keeps the stage active throughout the weekend.

The venue itself is the Woolworth Theatre, located at 223 Rep. John Lewis Way North in downtown Nashville's Fifth Avenue Historic District. It's a registered historic site and listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the National Historic Civil Rights Park. The rooms have seen everything from the lunch counter sit-ins of the Civil Rights Movement to the artists and performances that shaped the community. These days, it's the city's premier rental space for corporate events, galas and celebrations, and it also homes the Shiners Family Reunion, the venue's first-of-its-kind resident stage show. Marquee Big Band is one of the acts that brings live music into that space.
