A mushroom hike and mycology activity for children aged 6 to 13, exploring the fungus kingdom with microscopes.
Shelby Bottoms Nature Center is hosting Junior Naturalist: Fall Fungi on Saturday, October 17, from 2 PM to 3 PM. It's part of the center's Junior Naturalist series, and this particular session is all about the fungus kingdom. The whole thing is aimed at kids ages 6 to 13, so it's a good one to keep in mind if you've got a young one who spends their time poking around in the dirt.
The afternoon starts with a mushroom hike through the grounds, where the group will look for fungi in the wild. After that, the focus shifts to the microscopes, where the kids can get a closer look at the structures that make a mushroom what it is. It's a mix of getting out on the trail and then coming back inside to see the details that aren't visible to the naked eye.
