A mountain bike program for children aged 12-17 introducing off-road cycling, trail building and conservation, run by the Nashville Police Activities League.
The Nashville Police Activities League is hosting a Fall Mountain Biking Camp at Bells Bend Outdoor Center on Monday, October 12, from 9 AM to 3 PM. It's a free program for kids ages 12 to 17, and it's part of the league's broader mountain bike program, which introduces children to off-road cycling. The league selects participants based on need and access to the sport, so it's geared toward kids who might not otherwise get a chance to get on a trail.
The day covers more than just riding. The sessions run through mountain bike fundamentals, athletics, trail building and conservation, goal setting, and emotional regulation. It's a full day that looks at the sport from a few different angles—the technical side of handling a bike, the physical side of riding, and the stewardship side of taking care of the trails. The park leader for the camp is Sarah Bellos.
The setting is a big part of the experience. Bells Bend Outdoor Center is an environmental education and recreation facility run by the Nashville Metropolitan Board of Parks and Recreation, and it serves as the gateway to the 808-acre Bells Bend Park in Northwest Davidson County. The campus holds natural and cultural history displays, a library of local history titles, the historic 1842 Buchanon House, and a demonstration garden by the Friends of Bells Bend. It's also the main trailhead for six miles of hiking trails, so there's plenty to see around the camp.
