Free session at Warner Park Nature Center's long-term bird banding station, where federally licensed researchers and volunteers band migrating birds.
Warner Park Nature Center is hosting another fall bird banding session on Tuesday, October 20, from 8 AM to noon. It's one of several banding dates they run throughout the season, which stretches from September 1 through November 10.
If you've never seen bird banding in person, here's how it works: you watch trained, federally licensed researchers and volunteers capture wild birds, identify them, take measurements, and fit each one with a unique numbered aluminum leg band before letting them go. The whole thing happens at the center's long-term banding station, which has been running since 1982. The data they collect helps them track bird populations and migration patterns, and it gives them a better sense of why Warner Parks is such an important stop for birds on their way through Nashville.
This is part of the larger BIRD Program run by the Nature Center, which puts on free birding activities for all ages and interest levels. Beyond the banding sessions, they offer things like bird hikes, and you can experience spring and fall migration yourself with binoculars on the trail or by keeping eBird inventories. If you're coming with an organized group, you'll need to call or email ahead to let them know you're coming. One thing to keep in mind: banding can be canceled or rescheduled if the weather turns bad, so it's worth checking in if the forecast looks rough.
