Chamber Music City's inaugural season featuring a program of new and classic works, including the premiere of David Bruce's 'States of Glory'.
Chamber Music City opens its inaugural season at Clementine Hall on Friday, October 9, with a program that puts a new work alongside the classics. The ensemble is led by percussionist and founding artistic director Ji Hye Jung, and the evening's lineup features Ji Hye Jung, Jose Franch Ballester, and Clancy Newman.
The night is built around the first performance of States of Glory, a new piece by composer David Bruce written for clarinet, marimba, and cello. Bruce rooted the work in American folk tunes and shaped it around themes of freedom and hope in recognition of the nation's 250th year. Before the music starts, Bruce will be there to talk about the piece with TN 250 coordinator Carrie Tipton, so you'll get a bit of the thinking behind it before you actually hear it.
That new work shares the bill with pieces by Brahms and Schumann, the two names that give the night its title. It's a program that bridges new voices and beloved classics, with the Bruce premiere as the center of gravity. The ensemble brings together Jung, Ballester, and Newman for the season's opening.
