Emmy award-winning guitarist Benise performs flamenco and Spanish guitar in an intimate candlelight setting.
Benise brings his Spanish Nights by Candlelight to The Johnson Theater at TPAC on Thursday, November 5, starting at 7 PM. He's an Emmy award winner and a world-renowned virtuoso, known as "The Prince of Spanish Guitar," and this particular show is built around flamenco and Spanish guitar performed in an intimate candlelight setting.
What makes this one a bit different from a standard recital is the range of the set. Benise doesn't stick to one tradition; his arrangements draw on global influences and lean on a handful of familiar classics. You'll hear Moonlight Sonata and Aranjuez alongside Thunderstruck, Malaguena, Hotel California, and Kashmir. It's a mix that puts a Spanish guitar take on a few songs you've likely heard a dozen times in other styles, so the set moves between classical, flamenco, and some recognizable rock and pop.
He's not the only one on stage, either. The performance includes dance as well as guitar, and the whole thing is staged in that candlelight setting the title points to. It's a licensed event, so it's not directly affiliated with the nonprofit Tennessee Performing Arts Center, though it's held in their space.
