Free public guided tour of Titus Kaphar's exhibition 'Exhibiting Forgiveness' at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, led by a Mia artist.
Titus Kaphar's Exhibiting Forgiveness is on view at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, and on Friday, October 30, one of the museum's artists will lead a public guided tour through it. The tour starts at 1 PM in the Bell Family Decorative Arts Court (Gallery 333), and it's free.
Kaphar, an American artist born in 1976, built this exhibition around nine paintings he created for his feature-length film of the same name. The show is paired with that film and with his screenplay, a book that tells the story of a father and son who reunite after years of estrangement and make peace with their past, illustrated with hundreds of film stills and paintings. Together, they form a transmedial response to how a life in art can help heal from generational trauma, drawing on Kaphar's own early life and coming of age.
The guided tour walks you through the work with a Mia artist, opening up the paintings to talk about memory, family, trauma, healing, and forgiveness. It's the kind of tour that asks the bigger questions: what do we do with painful memories, can we forgive someone who hurt us, and what does healing actually look like in practice. If you've seen the paintings on your own, it's a good chance to hear them talked through out loud.
