Dreamsong's first solo show of prints by Oaxaca-born artist Fidencio Fifield-Perez, inspired by the garden and named after the final line of Derek Jarman's film Blue.
Fidencio Fifield-Perez is showing The Passing of a Shadow at Dreamsong, and it's his first solo show with the gallery. It's been running since September 10 and wraps up on Saturday, October 24, so this is the final stretch if you've been meaning to catch it.
Fifield-Perez was born in Oaxaca and now lives and works in Davis, California. He earned his MFA from the University of Iowa in 2015 and has picked up some notable recognition since then: the McKnight Printmaking Fellowship in 2025 and the inaugural Dr. Harold R. Adams Artist-in-Residence Fellowship at the University of Minnesota in 2022. His work has been shown at the Highpoint Center for Printmaking, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the International Print Center in New York, and it's been reviewed in ArtForum.
The garden is the site of inspiration here. Fifield-Perez draws parallels between the daily rituals of planting and growing and the networks of mutual care that sustain marginalized communities. The title, The Passing of a Shadow, comes from the final line of Derek Jarman's 1993 film Blue, and the show looks back to Jarman's final book—a diary of the garden he tended in Kent until his death in 1994.
