Solo exhibition by Minneapolis illustrator and muralist Jesse Quam, his first solo show in the city in eleven years.
Jesse Quam is back with a solo exhibition in Minneapolis, Street Relief, running at Modern Times through November 2. It's his first solo show in the city in eleven years, so it's been a while since he's had a whole room to himself here.
Quam is a Minneapolis-based illustrator, muralist, and classical painter. He's painted murals for pet shops, restaurants, and art museums across the United States and abroad, and he teaches printmaking on the side. He describes his style as growing out of a love for urban and rural travel, international artist residencies, and national printmaking apprenticeships—the kind of background that suggests a lot of time spent on the move and looking at how different places build their visual identities.
There's a personal thread to his career, too. In 2002 he met gallery owner Doug Flanders, and through him he exhibited alongside Judy Chicago. The two later married and have painted murals together in places like Madrid, Spain, and across North Dakota and Minneapolis. That mix of local roots and international work is a good way to frame the exhibition, especially given the gap since his last solo show in town.
