Søndergård and Trifonov

Daniil Trifonov returns to Orchestra Hall for a run of concerts from Thursday, March 18 through Saturday, March 20, 2027, playing with the Minnesota Orchestra under music director Thomas Søndergård. It's a double Brahms program: Piano Concerto No. 1 and Symphony No. 3.

For Trifonov, this is a return to the Minnesota Orchestra after more than a decade. He's a pianist who's been in the spotlight since he was 20, when he took First Prize and the Grand Prix at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. In 2018, he won the Grammy for Best Instrumental Solo Album for Transcendental. Hearing him back on this stage after all that time is a good enough reason on its own, and pairing him with Brahms' First Piano Concerto—a massive, dramatic work—gives him plenty of room to work with.

Søndergård is leading the orchestra through its 124th year of music-making. He took the podium in September 2022, and this is his fourth season as music director. Since then, he's brought back a few of his signature projects with new twists: the Sound Unbound series, which stages opera with immersive lighting and digital projections, and the Nordic Soundscapes festival, where he shares the podium with Conductor Laureate Osmo Vänskä. He also leads the orchestra's Composer Institute, mentoring emerging young composers. The second half of the program, Symphony No. 3, is a full orchestral piece, so you'll get to hear the ensemble on its own as well as with Trifonov.

The Minnesota Orchestra is now in its second century, a Grammy Award-winning ensemble that ranks among America's top symphonic orchestras. The concerts run from Thursday, March 18 through Saturday, March 20, at Orchestra Hall, 1111 Nicollet Mall, Minneapolis, MN 55403.
