Exhibition of new drawings and sculptures by Michal Sagar at Form + Content Gallery, exploring memory, history and identity.
Michal Sagar returns to Form + Content Gallery on October 29 with Sea Change, a new exhibition of drawings and sculptures. It runs through December 5, so you've got a good window to catch it over the fall. Sagar is a Minneapolis-based multidisciplinary artist whose practice is anchored in drawing, and she works across drawing, painting, sculpture, and installation to look at where memory, history, and identity overlap.
Sea Change grew out of a story about a postmenopausal killer whale that shares its accumulated survival experience to guide a new generation. The installation brings together drawings and sculptures of multiple materials, processes, and scales that evoke a restless ocean, a shadow of that killer whale, children, and a figure shaped by supple reeds—all suggesting transparency and shifting perspectives. It's a wide-ranging show, and the way it mixes drawing with sculpture is a good place to see how she works across different mediums at once.
Sagar has a long history with the gallery, and this is her latest solo show there after Sight Between in 2024, What Remains in 2022, and A Fertile Emptiness in 2018. She earned her MFA in Visual Studies from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and her BFA in Painting and Drawing from the San Francisco Art Institute, and she recently retired as Chair of the Visual Arts Department at Breck School here in Minneapolis. Her work often plays with the exchange between personal and collective narratives, and Sea Change fits right into that.
