Exhibition of contemporary Native artists from across the Midwest at All My Relations Arts, the first instalment of the gallery's fall/winter juried series.
Roots opens at All My Relations Arts on October 8 and runs through December 12, with an opening reception that same night from 6 to 8 PM. It's the first installment of the gallery's new fall/winter juried series, a platform for contemporary Native artists from across Turtle Island that celebrates language, storytelling, culture, and heritage.
The series starts with a specific question: how the Western colonial construct of borders was designed to divide Native nations and perpetuate cultural divisions through the systematic removal of Indigenous peoples from their ancestral homelands, and how art can help heal those ruptures. This first iteration focuses on the Midwest region—Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska, and Illinois—as a homage to the area's "Native POP" and the gallery's On Fertile Soil exhibition. It brings together emerging and seasoned Native artists alongside first-time exhibitors working across photography, sculpture, installation, painting, textile work, and illustration.
