Minnesota Orchestra under Thomas SÞndergÄrd with violinist Susie Park and the Minnesota Chorale, pairing Rachmaninoff's choral symphony 'The Bells' with Szymanowski's Violin Concerto No. 2.
The Minnesota Orchestra is back at Orchestra Hall on Friday, March 12, 2027, as part of its 2026-2027 Classical Season. The program pairs Rachmaninoff's The Bells with Szymanowski's Violin Concerto No. 2, and the orchestra will be led by Thomas SÞndergÄrd. Violinist Susie Park takes the solo for the Szymanowski.
The Bells is a choral symphony that doesn't get out much, and it's the bigger half of the evening. Rachmaninoff's fascination with bells goes back to his childhood, when his grandmother took him to church festivals, and the instrument carries a deep cultural and spiritual weight throughout his music. For this piece, the orchestra is joined by the Minnesota Chorale, which has served as its principal chorus since 2004 and was founded in 1972. The chorale brings the vocal side of the symphony to life, while the orchestra handles the instrumental weight.
On the other side of the bill is Szymanowski's Violin Concerto No. 2, with Susie Park on violin. It's a work that lets the violin step forward and carry the melody, a contrast to the choral scale of The Bells. Together, the two pieces make for a full evening of music, with the program leaning on both the orchestral and choral sides of the house.
