The Preservation Hall Jazz Band brings its Creole Christmas show to Orchestra Hall on Tuesday, December 1. It's part of the Minnesota Orchestra's holiday series, and the set is built around classic New Orleans sounds, with holiday songs given that unmistakable NOLA swing. The band has held the torch of New Orleans music for more than 65 years, carrying forward the history it was founded to preserve as a living tradition.
If you're coming from the record, their album So It Is redefines what New Orleans music means today. It draws on a sonic continuum that stretches back to the city's Afro-Cuban roots, through a common ancestry with Fela Kuti's Afrobeat and the Fire Music of Pharoah Sanders and John Coltrane, and forward to cutting-edge artists they've shared festival stages with from Coachella to Newport—names like Stevie Wonder, Elvis Costello, and the Grateful Dead alongside Beck, the Foo Fighters, My Morning Jacket, and the Black Keys.
