A contemporary photography exhibition featuring four galleries of work, including 'The Streets' and 'The Interpretation of Dreams', with a free opening reception.
Praxis Gallery & Photo Arts Center is opening a new group exhibition on Saturday, October 17, and it's a big one—four galleries of contemporary photography to walk through. The opening reception runs from 6 to 8 PM, with free admission and complimentary refreshments, so it's an easy way to spend a Saturday evening if you're around.
The show is split across four distinct rooms. Gallery 1, The Streets, is juried by Jonathan Pavlica and gathers images of public life—the gestures, chance encounters, humor, and tension of people just being out in the world. Gallery 2, The Interpretation of Dreams, is curated by the Praxis directors and takes a different direction, exploring imagined spaces and interior worlds through surreal compositions and the uncanny logic of dreams. Between the two, you move from the concrete observations of the street to the more abstract, interior side of things.
Gallery 3 features work by Minneapolis artist Pauline Kruger Hamilton, who left portrait painting to become one of Europe's sought-after portrait photographers; her show here is titled Romance, Murder, Royalty, War. Gallery 4 is a quiet study of landscape and light by Carl Schulze, titled The Subtlety of Place. Schulze works in handmade black-and-white silver gelatin prints—an analogue, photochemical approach to the intersection of nature and abstraction, using both historic and contemporary darkroom techniques. It's a slow, focused look at landscape and light, and it sits as a calm counterpoint to the other rooms.
