The fourth installment of the Neon Nightmares series, this exhibition brings together 30 visual artists who create immersive works using ultraviolet light.
Neon Nightmares returns to Artspace Jackson Flats on Saturday, October 17, for its fourth edition. It's an ultraviolet art exhibition that brings together 30 visual artists, all painting with light. The whole thing is built around blacklight, so the gallery transforms into a kaleidoscope of fluorescent fictions as soon as you step inside.
That's the core of the show: the work changes depending on the light. The organizers describe it as an immersive experience that blurs the lines between utopia and dystopia, a technicolor wonderland where dreams and nightmares glow side by side. With 30 artists involved, there's plenty to look at, and the UV light is what pulls the hidden details out of each piece.
One thing to keep in mind is that the lighting is a big part of the experience. The organizers recommend arriving early to see the artwork in regular light first, before the lights go down and the pieces reveal their hidden secrets under UV. If you get there early, you get to see the work twice—once as it looks in the day, and again once the blacklights take over.
